Responding to the Signs of the Times

Corrupt Government Leaders Have No Moral Authority to lead the Nation!

“Citizens are not obligated in conscience to follow the prescriptions of civil authorities if their precepts are contrary to the demands of the moral order, to the fundamental rights of persons or to the teachings of the Gospel” (#399 of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church)

What is happening today in our society only points to one thing: that the State has lost its moral ascendancy and is fast degenerating in the face of this recent NBN-ZTE deal exposé that unmask its true face, which is tyrannical against the people it has mandate to serve.

From among its ranks in civil service, the diminutive Mr. Rodolfo Lozada came out with his truth to expose what have been ‘standard operating procedures’ of government leaders in high places, “milking” millions from shady deals on projects that did not even directly benefit the people.

In the face of these, the silent uproar and vehemence is now slowly building up among our people, some of whom have become cynical about these graft and corrupt practices of government.

We, the Assumption College of Davao community, in solidarity with the rest in society who have the responsibility to educate and instill Christian values and nationalism among our children, are outraged by the incredulity of these actions among government leaders.

We are beginning to ask ourselves:

WHAT DOES A CHILD LEARN TODAY AS SHE/HE IS BOMBARDED WITH THE REAL DRAMA EACH DAY, TELLING HER/HIM ABOUT THE MISCONDUCT OF NATIONAL LEADERS?
WHAT KIND OF ROLE MODELS DO THEY HAVE TODAY?
CAN WE EXPECT BETTER LEADERS FOR TOMORROW IF WHAT THEY SEE AND HEAR IN THEIR MIDST ARE LEADERS WHO ARE OUTRIGHT LIARS, CHEATERS, GREEDY AND DISRESPECTFUL OF THEIR BASIC RIGHTS?

We cannot teach our children what HONESTY is all about without having to be confronted with the DISHONESTY of our national leaders.

We, in the educational institution have been preaching HONESTY, TRUTH and LOVE OF COUNTRY among our children amid the willful display of wholesale disavowal among government leaders of their nationality.

With all these alarming revelations poured out into the open at the Senate by Mr. Lozada, we could not help but decry ENOUGH is ENOUGH! It is good that we have this person who has the courage to speak the TRUTH.

We cannot play deaf and dumb over this situation! We are holding the leaders of the Philippine Government responsible for all these malevolence of people in government displayed with wanton disregard of the intelligence and basic human rights of the Filipino people! We can no longer keep our silence because silence would mean timidity and fear, and in effect this would be teaching our children to accept what the powerful wants us to do, and that is not to voice out our views and to stifle our own voice so they can freely trample on our dignity as a people!

We commend the courageous Mr. Rodolfo Noel Lozada, Jr. who risks his life for the TRUTH.

We appeal strongly to CHED Chair Romulo Neri, to also speak the TRUTH.

We call on every Filipino to join the clamor for redress from erring government officials!

We call on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to inhibit herself, if not to STEP DOWN from power as the investigation is on-going to give the Senate a free hand to fully unmask the culprit and bring to justice whoever is involved!

We demand to be fully accounted for everything that is transpiring in our society! It is our basic rights as a Sovereign people to seek redress from PUBLIC SERVANTS!

In the name of PEACE and JUSTICE, we call on every Filipino to RECLAIM our basic right to the TRUTH, to exercise our supreme power over the servants who have become the masters of those they have vowed to serve!

Let us continue to be vigilant and protect our birthright to know the TRUTH and uphold it!

“Men and women have the specific duty to move always towards the truth, to respect it and bear responsible witness to it” (#198 of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church)

“Then you will know the truth and the truth will make you free” (John 8:32)

Relevant Education for the Assumptionist in the 90s

Relevant education seemed too "adult-thinking" stuff, but not so at Assumption from the 90s to the present time, as not a few among high school students were beginning to see the light during the late 80s.

Then and Now...

Our Lady of the Assumption, where it had been for 50 years, continue to shower her blessings upon all who have been part of the Assumption College of Davao's quest to serve God's Anawim.

Even when physical changes marked the developments of ACD'S voyage through the years, upon calm and turbulent seas, still, Our Lady graciously and lovingly continue to guide the Missionaries of the Assumption and all those who have taken part in their journey towards holistic societal transformation for peace and justice and love to reign among God's people.

As ACD prepares for her Golden Jubilee celebration, the Historical Committee wish to thank all those who are now taking part in our work to recall our past, especially among the Alumni (Batch 80 and 85) who are very enthusiastic in their continuing search for their former classmates. We likewise invite the other alumni to come and join us in the grand homecoming.

Let Our Lady of the Assumption steer our cruise towards that shining star of our grand celebration. Mabuhay tayong lahat!

ACD in the 80s

The following is an excerpt of some of the details of the ACD history being written:

An alumna was asked by the staff of The Assumption ’95 to write about her batch in the 80s, and this was what she shared:

Memories Do Linger (an excerpt)

A Class Reunion

Circa ’80 is unique in a sense that it was one of the last few batches that catered exclusively to girls. Admittedly, there is a difference in growing up in this environment compared with a coeducational curriculum. Others say it is a bane while others declare it a blessing. Whatever the opinion may be the following are to be considered as facts for easier recall:

- physical sizes always mark one off as unique anytime;
- athletic prowess makes one popular;
- academic accomplishments get one recognized;
- singers, dancers and actresses find themselves with a name;
- romantic ones get queries; and
- uncooperative still do not show up.

Ma. Erlinda P. Gaanan, Ph.D was former news editor of The Assumption (SY 1979-80). When she wrote the piece above in 1995, she was news editor of Davao City-based magazine The Fox.

It's good to know that not a few Alumni are so enthusiastic with the idea of getting together and joining the upcoming Golden Jubilee celebration. The 1980 batch with the leadership of Ms. Judith (Joy) Puyat-Magnaye are so into it and are so infectious that other batches are catching on up. Mabuhay!!!
